Forum Problems

L1: Forum ProblemsFor the last few nights we have had problems with junk posts so we added the simple Captcha control at the top of the page used to post/edit messages. This should stop any automated bots if that is where the posts are coming from.If the junk posts continue, we will merely move to a system that will only allow someone to post a message after they have registered for the website. 2009-12-03 11:27, By: Gfw, IP: [216.80.125.206]

Yes, I noticed all that junk mail in here. It made my idiot detector go “DING!”. 2009-12-04 05:39, By: Ed_B, IP: [71.236.183.224]

L3: Forum ProblemsRegarding a different issue, for several months now efforts to load this site have been unsuccessful about 60% of the time. I know it is not my browser because most sites load promptly. With this site it either loads right away or not at all. Anyone else experiencing this?2009-12-05 16:44, By: Alan S., IP: [24.116.165.60]

L4: Forum ProblemsI am constantly loading from 4 different computers using a cable connection and either Firefox 3.5 or Internet Explorer 8 and it typically loads in less than a second. At any rate, the site isn’t going to change much and not at all regarding the actual structure of the site.2009-12-05 16:54, By: gfw, IP: [216.80.125.206]

L4: Forum ProblemsJust a s a follow-up my previous post. I just took out my Netbook which is the slowest computer that I have.I removed any previously cached files to purposely slow performance by insuring that all pieces have to be downloaded. After typing 72t.net in the browser, I pressed the enter key and timeduntil the entire page was downloaded. It took 4.5 seconds – really not that slow. I then clicked on theDiscussion Forum link and again timed the page until totally downloaded – about 2.5 seconds – again acceptable speed. The configuration of the Netbook computer is:

Windows 7 Home Premium with all updates
Wireless connection running from a Linksys wireless router
InternetExplorer 8 with all updates

Alan:

I am not having any trouble loading this site or the forum messages. I connect via 1 of 3 desktops and a laptop PC and none of them has ever failed to load this site or take more than a couple of seconds to do so. I’m not sure what would cause that to happen, unless it is some kind of web site filtering, such as is sometimes used to prevent kids from accessing certain web sites. While that may not be the problem here, it definitely looks like some kind of software issue.

I would look into running some utility programs to clean any junkware off of your PC and also check the registry file for errors. I use a couple of programs for this that are free to download and work well. One is called Cr@pCleaner (substitute an “a” for the “@”) or CC. The other is called Wise Registry Cleaner or WRC. I run these about every 2-3 weeks and my PCs run great.

L5: Forum ProblemsThanks gfw and Ed for your responses. When the site loads, it always does so in less than 4 seconds. But itonly loads onabout 1/3 of the efforts.AndI am not having this problem with any other site I consistently use, and this has been going on for several months now. I use a MacAfee virus program and Windows Defender for spyware and also a Registry Cleaner repair program. I have turned off Phishing filters. The computer runs fine in all other respects.Needless to say, this is mystifing since it is peculiar to just this site and has been consistently this way for months, including the approximate 30% “hit ratio”. But if no one else is experiencing this, it must be related to a problem on my end.2009-12-06 17:39, By: Alan S., IP: [24.116.165.60]

L6: Forum ProblemsAlan:Are you using Windows Internet Explorer? I have v8 and it sometimes does some odd things. I don’t recall it doing exactly what you describe but it does have problems, particularly with tabs… for some unknown reason. The usual manifestation of this is that it will simply “stop responding” at times and most often at a very inconvenient time. An error message will appear sometimes that says “IE has stopped responding. Would you like to search the web for an answer to this problem”. If you select “yes” in response to this, it will correct the tab problem, notify you of that fact, and then resume running as if nothing had happened… for a while. I avoid usingIE whenever possible for this reason. I am sure that this is not IE’s only problem but it is certainly oneof its most annoying problems. Recently, Opera v10 has come along and it is now 100% compatible with this web site. If you haven’t tried Opera, now might be a good time to do so. If you try it and this problem disappears, then the fault is most likely with IE.2009-12-06 19:53, By: Ed_B, IP: [71.236.183.224]

L6: Forum ProblemsAlan, I’ve experienced similar problems also. Iuse IE and this is the only site that seems to have a problem loading more than 50% of the time. Also, Iused to get an email whenever there was an update to the discussion board, but no longer get an email alertnot sure what that problem is. There must be an option to allow this, but I haven’t figured out what it is. If I post and there is a response, I do get an email alert, but no longer for ALL updated posts. Maybe someone can give me guidance on this issued. Here’s what I’ve been experiencing in last couple of months regarding loading the site. Each day the first time I go to site it usually loads promptly;but the next time it may or may not load for hours unless I shut the computer down. When I was getting the email alerts it always allowed me to just click through the email and read the discussion, but ifanother email alert came that same day it would not allow me to load the site at all. I would have to restart the computer to see the discussions. meb242009-12-07 19:11, By: meb24, IP: [71.162.242.53]

L7: Forum Problemsmeb24… Make sure that you clean the cache on your local computer and perhaps, try Firefox or Opera.2009-12-07 19:27, By: Gfw, IP: [216.80.125.206]

L8: Forum ProblemsFYI – Yes, I am using IE 7, tried 8 some time ago but went back to 7 because too many sites were not compatible with 8 at the time.meb, our problems sound very similar. First effort of the day is usually successful, after that it is hit and miss. I will tryresponding from the alerts to see if that makes a difference.2009-12-08 00:49, By: Alan S., IP: [24.116.165.60]
