L1: My Opinion On Advice Vs. My OpinionRecently, I have noticed a substantial number of postings which all begin with: “I have a client who wants to do …..”. This type of opening implies that a number of you are: brokers, financial advisors, CFPs with an occasional CPA or attorney thrown in for good measure. In this regard, each of you (as well as myself), depending on your professional designation, hold and have certain and specific duties to your clients.
In reference to the above, when posting here; and more importantly, when you return to read the response(s), let me be perfectly clear: You are reading my personal opinion; not my professional advice and no client representation exists by virtue of these postings and replies.
However, given the nature, and often the seriousness, of the postings here, I suspect that some of you maybe using the board as a shortcut. Using the board as a shortcut to: confirm you existing thinking; gain general information & knowledge or even to pose a hypothetical are all well and fine. To use the board to solve a specific client dilemma is potentially unwise; particularly if your only source of reliance is the board. In these later circumstances, I would personally advocate that you seek out professional advice (versus the opinions found on the board) to better and fully serve your clients needs.
All of the above is my attempt to diplomatically avoid a problem. It would be unfortunate for a reader to print off a posting and a related reply or two and drop it in a client file thinking that one had fully diagnosed and researched all the issues at hand; then, at some future date, one learns that the reply they had received earlier is incomplete or incorrect. I am by no means suggesting that incorrect replies at posted here; far from it. However, rarely, are all the pertinent facts, figures and circumstances disclosed that can ultimately be the deciding issues to appropriate professional advice.
