Life expectancy table

L1: Life expectancy tableI was going to start a SEPP this month using the Joint Life and Last Survivor Table which is included as Appendix C in Pub 590. I have past Pub 590s and this table was the same in Pub 590 for 2003 and 2002 Returns, but the table is slightly different in Pub 590 for 2001 Returns. How do I know if the table in Pub 590 for 2003 Returns hasn’t been updated causing my SEPP calculation to be in error? This link has the same table, but how do I know if it hasn’t been updated either?

L2: Life expectancy tableHello S:
You may rely upon the most current (in this case Pub 590 / 2003) for two reasons:
(1) The IRS says so. They recognize the lag issue and have repoeatedly ruled that “most current” is good enough.
(2) The LE tables are only updated once per decade based on the taking o fhte US Census; usually with a 9 – 10 year lag.

L2: Life expectancy tableThe tables changed for 2002+ If you check out our calculators you’ll find that they produce the same numbers as those found in the current Pub 590. That’s because they are based on the same table, the Annuity 2003 table which was part of the final minimum distribution regulations.
